Abstract

Istilah retorik mempunyai pelbagai tanggapan. Segelintir masyarakat sering menyalah tafsir dan mempunyai tanggapan negatif terhadap istilah retorik. Laporan daripada pihak media yang gemar menggunakan istilah retorik dalam isu-isu negatif juga antara faktor yang menatijahkan fenomena ini berlaku. Ada yang berpendapat bahawa retorik adalah ‘cakap kosong’ atau ‘janji kosong’ seperti mana yang sering dikaitkan dengan agenda politik oleh pihak akhbar. Walhal, dari sudut pandang ilmu pengetahuan, ahli linguistik berpendapat bahawa retorik berkait rapat dengan hujah atau usaha untuk menarik perhatian khalayak. Hujah yang kukuh semestinya hadir bersama bukti atau sumber yang berwibawa bagi membentuk keyakinan dan kepercayaan khalayak terhadap perkara yang diperkatakan. Kepelbagaian tanggapan ini memerlukan satu penerangan atau pendedahan yang khusus. Maka, artikel ini akan merungkai sejarah perkembangan retorik dan istilah atau makna sebenar retorik. Penerangan mengenai sejarah perkembangan dan takrifan retorik ini diharap dapat dijadikan sebagai pendedahan dan panduan kepada masyarakat khususnya perucap dan penulis untuk menghasilkan teks atau ucapan yang lebih berkesan dan mampu mempengaruhi khalayak sasaran seperti yang diinginkan. Selain itu, artikel ini juga diharap dapat dijadikan sebagai rujukan dalam bidang linguistik khususnya dalam konteks retorik.

The term rhetoric has various perceptions. A small number of people often misinterpret and have negative perceptions of the term rhetoric. Reports from the media that like to use the term rhetoric in negative issues are also among the factors that contribute to this phenomenon. Some believe that rhetoric is 'empty talk' or 'empty promises' as is often associated with the political agenda by the press. However, from a scientific perspective, linguists believe that rhetoric is closely related to arguments or efforts to attract the audience's attention. A strong argument must be accompanied by authoritative evidence or sources to form the audience's confidence and belief in the matter being discussed. These diverse perceptions require a specific explanation or exposure. Therefore, this article will unravel the history of the development of rhetoric and the term or true meaning of rhetoric. It is hoped that this explanation of the history of the development and definition of rhetoric can be used as an exposure and guide to the public, especially speakers and writers, to produce more effective texts or speeches that can influence the target audience as desired. In addition, this article is also hoped to be used as a reference in the field of linguistics, especially in the context of rhetoric.
