Abstract

To date, the Quranic Studies in Islamic Higher Education (PTAI) in Indonesia is growing rapidly. However, it is still faced with a myriad of problems, such as relying on classical books, conventional teaching methods, limited technology and the lecturers’ skills that have not been updated. Meanwhile, the world needs answers to the various problems that are growing over time. To overcome these issues, the idea to empower the Quranic Studies is offered to be implemented at PTIQ Jakarta Institute as a special institution in the field of the Quran which is famous in Indonesia. Thus, empowerment of Quranic Studies is expected to be a means of developing and evaluating in the future. In this study, a qualitative approach is used. Five participants were interviewed. Interviews were used as the main data collection method and were supported by review on the relevant documents. The process of data analysis is also performed by using thematic analysis methods. The results of this study have shown that empowerment of Quranic Studies at PTIQ was carried out in four dimensions, namely curriculum and syllabus assessment, ICT development, strengthening teaching methods and improving the professionalism of lectures. The implementation of this suggested dimension of empowerment is expected to be able to increase the PTIQ as an authoritative reference center in the Quranic Studies and at the same time be able to carry out the transformation of creating brilliance after 50 years of existence. The results of this study can be used as a reference by other public and private universities, either in Indonesia or in Malaysia, to take further steps in strengthening the field of Quranic Studies to be equivalent with other areas of Islamic Studies.
