Abstract

Tahfiz al-Quran education in Malaysia has produced numerous secondary school huffaz who would be enrolling into universities to further their tertiary studies. At the tertiary level, they would not have anyone to guide them on the Quran besides being free to organise their daily activities. As undergraduate students, they would be busy with academic matters, not having a conducive environment for murajaah al-Quran and often having trouble in time management. Hence, the question is how far the huffaz at the tertiary level are capable of performing murajaah to keep the memorisation of al-Quran. Therefore, this paper identifies issues and challenges faced by the huffaz at the tertiary institutions and formulates strategies that could be implemented in efforts to retain their Quranic memorisation. This study is qualitative in nature and used the content analysis approach, which employed the document analysis method, while the data were analysed thematically. This study had identified five main issues that were presumed to be problems for the huffaz in retaining their memorisation of al-Quran. Besides that, this study propose six strategies that are vital for the huffaz to be committed to engage in murajaah activities. The implication of this paper will give guidelines to the authorities to design a comprehensive learning strategy by maximising the potential of the huffaz at the tertiary level.
